How it all began

DCI - Drought Bites hard in Wajir County

Drought

North-eastern Kenya Kenya is home to the Somali population in Kenya. Since Colonial Period, the Wajir County and its neighbouring counties in the Northern frontier remain marganized and deprived of many developmental and humanitarian programming.

When the worst drought affected the population, many families lost their sense of hope, property and self-worth. We were part of the generation that heard the stories from miles. We lost of our school education lessons, saw the effect of lives of children getting harder and harder and worst of all we almost died of thirst.

A group of Wajir youth who faced the same concern, felt the one question of how: Can we develop Wajir County to a better future.

The name Development Concern come into being and as an initiative we regsitered as local community based organization and began to teach ourself basic skills and start income generating activities for us and many other youth

Our Mission was drawn

A just, equitable and progressive society in which marginalized communities fully enjoy social, economic and political rights

Vulnerable Populations

The initiative of DCI concerns itself with the real idea on the lives of the vulnerable populations to drought. The most basic human rights: Water, Health, Protection from harmful practices and extremism, education for the vulnerable populations.

DCI is finding its way to build a secured and inclusive society through well thought development approaches that are realistic, sustainable and community led. It was formed by a group of professional youth based in Wajir County with currently 5 employees and 10 volunteers. The management of DCI include men and women from different skill sets. The organization works under the effective management of Board of Directors. There are 3 directors in the board and the management meets once a year. In the annual meeting, the board discusses the progress and reviews performance

We don’t know where we'll be in a week or in a month or a year to come. We do what we want for as long as we want, always trying out new concerns that affect our development persepctives and context for Wajir County.
